Role Description:

The Database Administrator is responsible for maintaining the company’s and client’s database systems, a Microsoft SQL Architecture, including performance tuning, capacity planning, monitoring critical events, and documentation.


  • Analyze, design and implement database structures.
  • Define and maintain physical structures, ensuring the best possible performance and recoverability of databases.
  • Perform backup and recovery tasks on local and remote environment (DRS).
  • Maintain data integrity and security (manage roles and permissions of database users).
  • Conduct design reviews to meet physical and performance demand for storage and response time requirements.
  • Monitor performance using Wait statistics
  • Use tools like DMVs and extended events for database monitoring and tuning. Generate traces, execution plans, identify performance issues, deadlocks/contention and resolve them.
  • Develop strategies and implement solutions for managing backups and restors.
  • Conduct DBMS system maintenance tasks to ensure uptime and expected business performance.
  • Write database documentation including data standards/procedures and definitions for the data dictionary.
  • Develop, test, and provide instructions for back-up and recovery plans..
  • Ensure that storage and archiving procedures are functioning correctly.
  • Conduct capacity planning monitoring and forecasts schedules for storage and server performance tuning.
  • Confers regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security model standards are followed consistent with company governance.
  • Configuration and guidance to others regarding AlwaysOn, partitioning, compression.

General Abilities and Knowledges:

  • 5 years of experience in administering MS SQL server databases; preferably on later versions of versions such as SQL Server 2012 and later
  • Extensive experience writing T-SQL and stored procedures and query tuning on high-transaction systems.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience administering databases in SQL Server operating systems environment..
  • Experience in SQL Server Clustering and High Availability (HA) technologies including mirroring, log shipping, failover cluster and various replication technologies
  • Nice to have: knowledge of other databases such as MySQL, Postgres
  • Firm understanding of PaaS database offerings from AWS or Azure

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and/or Computer Engineering or related field from accredited college or university.
  • Analyze, design and implement database structures.
  • Use tools like SQL Profiler for database tuning. Generate traces, execution plans, identify performance issues, deadlocks/contention and resolve them.
  • Experience with very large databases and/or data warehousing, database optimization with Oracle DBMS and experience using database-monitoring tools.
  • Experience creating and implementing physical databases from Logical Data Models, data management, versioning of data, backups, etc.
